스웨덴이 낳은 혼성그룹 Abba가 해체된 뒤 남자 멤버들인 Benny Anderson 와 Bjorn Ulvaeus은 뮤지컬쪽에 관심을 가지게 되며,  이들은 웨버의 초기 작품인 Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat ', 'Cats', 'Jesus Christ Superstar', 'Evita' 을 통해 전세계적인 성공을 구가했던 작사가 Tim Rice와 함께 손잡고 뮤지컬 'Chess'를 제작하게 된다. 당시 Benny와 Bjorn의 탁월한 작곡능력, 뮤지컬 관객의 트렌드를 정확하게 집어내는 작사가 Tim Rice, 당시 이들의 능력을 믿고 엄청난 거액을 투자했던 펀드 등,  아무도 이들의 성공을 믿어 의심치 않았다.

 

1984년에는 머레이 헤드(Murray Head)가 부른  'One Night in Bangkok'이 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 5위권에 드는 히트를 기록하기도 했다. 하지만 결과는 흥행 참패. 태국이 주는 이국적인 분위기를 무대로 잘 살려내지 못한데다가 세계 체스대회라는 소재가 그렇게 썩 흥행적이진 못 했던듯....

동양에 자리잡은 이 도시는
율브리너(타이황실배경 영화, 왕과 나 출연)는 없지만 수많은 쇼가 있고
체스월드 최고의 장소가 되어가고 있다는 것을 모를거야.

시간은 쏜살같이 빨리 지나가지
체스선수들이 티롤린 스파를 다녀간후 모든것이 변했지.
체스를 이렇게 잘 두는 사람에겐 모든곳이 다 평범하진 않아

그곳(국제 체스경기를 개최할 곳)은 아일랜드, 필리핀,
헤이스팅스(영국의 해안 휴양지) 아니면 이곳(방콕)이지.

(※ Somerset Maugham suite = 서양인들에게 방콕의 특급호텔로 잘 알려진 오리엔탈 호텔.

     이 호텔에 서머셋 멈이란 작가가 자주 머물던 객실을 작가의 이름을 따서 지은데서 유래)
